THE CHALLENGE

Help 4 Homeless Veterans (H4HV) completed the purchase of a terraced house in Masbrough, Rotherham with funds raised by the public and significant donations from Mayors of Rotherham and Barnsley in February 2026 to be an emergency home for veterans in urgent need across Yorkshire, Humber and North Lincolnshire.

Since the charity was founded in 2012, they have helped more than 1,100 veterans with their housing challenges. They needed to make this home fit for occupation as quickly as possible to help veterans in need of support.

The property was previously occupied as a family home, so didn’t require a full refurbishment, only essential works to make it suitable for multiple occupancy, fully compliant with all Rotherham Council’s requirements.

THE OUTCOME

When H4HV approached us for help, we knew we had the professional knowledge and expertise to coordinate the transformation of the house with our Director of Operations for New Build, Richard Greenwood, acting as project manager.  A range of contractors and consultants on our Gen-4 frameworks for installation, repairs and maintenance, new build and consultancy services generously stepped forward to offer their help

  • Floor plans – DevCom, Sheffield
  • Asbestos survey – The Testing Lab, Doncaster
  • Fire risk assessment – Bailey Partnership, Manchester
  • Loft insulation and hatches – EWIS, Walsall & Barnsley
  • Electrical re‑wiring – Equans UK & Ireland, Rotherham
  • Roof repairs – BAAS Construction Ltd, Burnley
  • Floor coverings and decorating – RE:GEN, Wakefield
  • uPVC window repairs – DJB Installations, Doncaster
  • Front door replacement – David Cussons Windows and Doors, Normanton
  • Fire door replacement & handrails – Termrim Construction, Huddersfield
  • Decorating – Lovell Partnerships and Greens Decorating, Leeds

The total value of the works provided at no charge or nominal charge was £30,000.

Completion was delayed due to the availability of bespoke internal fire doors which needed to be installed to allow for disabled access.

Members of the EN:Procure team were delighted to join Help 4 Homeless Veterans (H4HV) to celebrate the completion of the refurbishment of the newly named Wood House in Rotherham alongside frameworks contractors who volunteered their time, services, works and materials at no cost or nominal rates on Friday 12 June.

The house was ready to welcome guests on Tuesday 16 June 2026. It can accommodate up to four veterans at any one time who are urgently in need of a place to stay.

The charity is incredibly grateful for all the generous support we’ve received from the public and businesses. Without this help we wouldn’t have been able to purchase and refurbish Wood House. Completing this property is a milestone achievement for us which has been a longstanding ambition. Owning and operating our own accommodation will provide veterans who come to us for help with faster, easier access to a safe space and stepping stone to help get them back on track.”

Steve Bentham-Bates | Chief Executive Officer, Help 4 Homeless Veterans

“When I received the email asking for help, I got straight on the phone to find out more. My father was in the parachute regiment  and I trained my nephew so he could follow in his grandad’s footsteps – so having the chance to help H4HV wasn’t even a thought, it was a ‘when do you get the keys?’ The real thanks go to Tom Wood who started the charity many years ago and Steve Bentham-Bates and the trustees who’ve given their all for over a decade. The level of respect they have for each other is unreal. They’re truly making a difference, and if we had more people like this, the world would be a better place.”

Dave Thomas | Managing Director, The Testing Lab

We’re pleased to have been able to support this important initiative by giving a helping hand to bring the building up to modern standards. At Equans we are proud to support the communities surrounding the work we do and Wood House is a very worthy project which we’re sure will be a lifeline for veterans in Rotherham for years to come.”

Jordan Hammond | Operations Manager, Equans

When Help 4 Homeless Veterans approached us and told us about their Buy a Brick Campaign, we knew we could help them establish the house they needed to provide immediate practical support. Their service is vital to keep veterans safe in their time of urgent need. It’s been our pleasure to manage the refurbishment of Wood House with the fantastic team of contractors and consultants in our supply chain who’ve helped to transform the house. Their speed of response and willingness to help has been outstanding. Thanks to all of them for their professionalism and well done to everyone involved.”
