Joe Jervis - Lincolnshire Housing Partnership

Joe Jarvis

Role and Qualification: Technical Apprentice

Host: Lincolnshire Housing Partnership

What were you doing prior to starting your apprenticeship? Working part time - not in a long-term career position. Studied 1 year at university alongside this before choosing the apprenticeship route as I felt it would be more beneficial to learn on the job: this proved to be correct.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship? After studying nearly a full year at University, I felt the apprenticeship route would more suit my ability to learn.

Tell us about your experiences so far in your role - What do you enjoy doing? What has been really rewarding? I enjoy the variety of tasks I got given at the start and the variety of work throughout. I have seen all aspects of how the company is run. The most rewarding part is that I was offered a full-time role at this company following on from my apprenticeship.

In your apprenticeship, do you see where your career could go?  Can you see the career path, has your employer set something out for you for when you complete your apprenticeship? At the start of my apprenticeship I kept my options open before expressing a large amount of interest in Quantity Surveying, after not long at all this was my full-time day to day role (assisting the QS) and my hard work has been rewarded with a full time role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor following this apprenticeship.

Do you feel supported by your employer?  Do you feel like you've had enough contact and support from Efficiency North? They were always there if needed.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?  If yes, why? Absolutely. Learning on the job is really beneficial and it sets up a career pathway.

“I have worked with Joe since he joined the business as a Technical Apprentice in October 2016. Very early on during his apprenticeship, Joe expressed an interest in the field of Quantity Surveying and I have been pleased to mentor him focusing on different facets of Supply Chain Management.

Joe is very approachable, keen to learn, and takes on direction and instruction well. He is also reliable, capable and willing to go ‘over and above’ the call of duty to get the job done.

Joe was successful in recently being appointed to the permanent role of ‘Trainee Quantity Surveyor’ at LHP, which was testament to both his dedication and ability to put into practice everything learnt during his apprenticeship.

Since securing full time employment; Joe has completed his BTEC & NVQ Qualifications ahead of time, is continually expanding his knowledge base and growing in confidence."
