Today’s news that a long awaited devolution deal has been struck between the Government and the Local Authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield is great news for the businesses and communities of the city region. As we have experienced in other areas of Yorkshire and the Humber, well managed devolution brings greater capability to develop targeted and creative approaches to transport, education and housing which are all enhanced by increased funding. Also, as highlighted by the mayor of the city region, we can expect some of that funding to be invested in intelligent initiatives to bring a much needed stimulus the green economy.
From Efficiency North’s perspective we hope that the city region is creative in providing funding opportunities so that vital pathways into employment and training are reinstated allowing organisations with a real commitment to training and employment to assist those seeking careers in construction. Also, as gaps have emerged in the funding for the provision of affordable housing we urge the city region to provide opportunities to secure funding for affordable housing on sites that are unviable due to their previous use or significant land abnormalities. In doing so, the city region could improve the employability of thousands of people whilst providing vital affordable homes on unused land.
