We’re proud to celebrate Tom Swallow on completing his Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship with Leeds College of Building, hosted by Alan Wood & Partners, and employed by EN:Able Futures.
Tom chose the apprenticeship route because it offered the best of both worlds — combining hands-on, practical experience with academic study. Over his training, he gained confidence, technical skills, and in-depth knowledge of engineering software, producing technical drawings and working on real-world projects.
One of Tom’s proudest achievements was completing his BTEC Level 3, which included an End Point Assessment where he designed a building from scratch. This project, along with daily experience on the job, has prepared him for the next stage of his career.
Looking ahead, Tom has applied to study for a Level 6 Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Derby University, with ambitions to progress to a Master’s and become a chartered civil or structural engineer.
Tom credits his success to the support of his EN:Able Futures mentor, who helped track his progress, set goals, and offer valuable career advice, as well as the open and encouraging environment at Alan Wood & Partners.
His advice to future apprentices?
“Never be afraid to ask questions, and put yourself forward for as much as possible to broaden your horizons and gain as much knowledge as you can.”
