Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Association, Youth Provision and Community Development Project Phase 2-4

Project Scope

Funding received was used to redevelop the Community Centre to provide accommodation and facilities to start a new Youth Club (Junior and Senior), Guides Unit, Scouts Group, additional Before and After school Club care capacity, and a second meeting room in order to continue to accommodate existing adult users groups whilst complying with current Ofsted requirements, disability needs and other legislation.

After competitive tendering the Phase 2-4 contract was awarded to A11 Building Maintenance Ltd.

The building work is scheduled to proceed throughout summer 2014 with major redevelopment taking place during the school summer holidays. Materials are being sourced locally in Selby.

Key Benefits and Outcomes Delivered

Monk Fryston school will have the opportunity to visit the site whilst the building process is taking place to develop an understanding of current building regulations aimed at reducing carbon consumption. Later they will be able to measure the impact of installing energy efficiency devices such as LED lighting.

Since the start of the project the Before and After School Club has recruited additional staff, which are either school leavers or from College and enrolled them into their apprenticeship scheme. The outcome will be to develop these staff from being unskilled into skilled people qualified in child care with GCSEs in Maths, English and ICT.

The Junior Youth club has enabled 1 Duke of Edinburgh award candidate to undertake part of the course, as well as opportunities for a number of adults to be involved in the running and operation of the club.

In addition there are now 2 new clubs operating which over 30 youngsters are attending on a regular basis where they’re developing their social, craft and leadership skills.
